Density to Weight Calculator

Convert density and volume into mass, weight force, specific weight and reverse volume. This page keeps mass and weight separate, because using the words interchangeably is convenient until gravity enters the room.

Density to Weight Calculator chart

The graph updates from the calculator result so you can compare the answer visually instead of staring at one lonely number like civilization intended.

Key terms

Mass

Amount of matter, measured in kg, g, lbm and similar mass units.

Weight

Force on a mass due to gravity, measured in N, kN, lbf or kgf.

Density

Mass divided by volume.

Specific weight

Weight force per unit volume, γ=ρg.

Density to mass and weight formulas

The first step is always mass:

m = ρV
W = mg = ρVg
γ = ρg

Mass does not change when you move an object from Earth to the Moon. Weight force does, because gravitational acceleration is different.

How to use the density to weight calculator

Enter density, volume and quantity. Choose a gravity preset when you need weight force. The result shows mass, force, specific weight and converted units.

Use material density from a specification or the Material Density Calculator. If you only know dimensions, calculate volume from shape first.

How to find weight from volume

For a homogeneous solid, determine the external material volume, multiply by density for mass, then multiply by gravity if the requested “weight” is force. Hollow objects require subtracting internal void volume.

Example

0.02 m³ of aluminum at 2700 kg/m³ has a mass of 54 kg. On Earth, its weight force is approximately 529.6 N using standard gravity 9.80665 m/s².

Reverse calculation: weight or mass to volume

If mass and density are known, volume is V=m/ρ. If force is given instead, convert force to mass using m=W/g before calculating volume. This distinction matters when specifications use pounds-force rather than pounds-mass.

Specific weight vs density

Density is mass per volume. Specific weight is force per volume. They are related by γ=ρg, so specific weight depends on the chosen gravitational acceleration while density does not.

For water near room temperature, density is about 998 kg/m³. Its specific weight on Earth is roughly 9.79 kN/m³.

Bulk density and material density

Bulk materials such as soil, grain, gravel or foam may contain significant void space. If you are estimating the weight of a truckload, bin or excavation, use the appropriate bulk density, not the true density of the solid grains.

Geometry, quantity and batch calculations

A practical weight calculation often combines geometry and density. Compute the volume of one piece, multiply by material density, then multiply by quantity. Dedicated cube, cylinder and glass calculators automate common shapes and thickness-based parts.

Common mistakes

The most common errors are confusing mass with force, using density from the wrong material condition, entering cm³ as m³, forgetting that dimensions are cubed, and using a solid density for a hollow or porous product.

Worked density-to-weight example

Suppose a steel plate assembly has a net material volume of 0.015 m³ and you use 7850 kg/m³ as the steel density. Estimated mass is 7850×0.015=117.75 kg. Under standard Earth gravity, weight force is about 117.75×9.80665=1154.7 N. If there are four identical pieces, total mass is 471 kg. This example shows why quantity should be applied after the per-piece geometry is correct.

Useful density-to-weight units

Input / output Common units
Density kg/m³, g/cm³, lb/ft³
Volume m³, L, cm³, ft³, in³
Mass kg, g, lbm
Weight force N, kN, lbf
Specific weight N/m³, kN/m³

The calculator converts to a consistent basis internally so a density in lb/ft³ can still be paired with a metric geometry once units are converted correctly.

Where density-to-weight calculations are used

Common applications include estimating steel or aluminum parts, glass sheets, concrete elements, tank contents, bulk material loads and shipping mass. In manufactured parts, CAD volume is often more accurate than idealized geometry because holes, fillets, threads and cutouts are already represented.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert density to weight?

Use m=ρV for mass. If you need weight force, use W=ρVg.

How do I convert density to pounds?

Density alone cannot become pounds; you also need a volume. Multiply density by volume, then convert the resulting mass to pounds.

How do I convert density to kilograms?

You need a volume. Mass in kilograms equals density in kg/m³ multiplied by volume in m³.

What is the difference between density and weight?

Density is mass per volume; weight is gravitational force on mass.

What are the three density formulas?

ρ=m/V, m=ρV and V=m/ρ.

What is specific weight?

Specific weight is weight force per unit volume, γ=ρg.

How do I find weight from volume?

Multiply volume by density for mass, then by gravity for force if required.
